2006 Volkswagen Jetta

2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 14995
Miles: 89000
Description: Vehicle Overview

Halfway through the 2005 model year, Volkswagen launched a redesigned Jetta. For 2006, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that generates 200 horsepower is available. Additional engine choices include a 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder and a diesel four-cylinder.

For 2006, a new Jetta GLI powered by the turbocharged engine features a sport suspension, 17-inch wheels, rocker panels and xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights as standard equipment. Jettas are manufactured in Puebla, Mexico.

Exterior

Exhibiting a sleeker look than the prior-generation Jetta, the current model has a large trapezoidal grille. Wheels are available in 15- , 16- , 17- or 18-inch diameters, and the Jetta uses an electromechanical power-steering system. A sunroof is optional.

Interior

Up to five people can fit inside the Jetta, which has front bucket seats and a three-place 60/40-split, folding rear seat. Non-intruding hinges help provide sufficient luggage space in the trunk, which holds 16 cubic feet of cargo.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a CD stereo with 10 speakers, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Leather seating surfaces and a navigation system are optional.

Under the Hood

The base engine in the Jetta is a 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder that produces 150 hp and drives either a five-speed-manual or six-speed-automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual gear selection and a Sport mode. The direct-injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder generates 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque and teams with a six-speed manual or a six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox automated manual transmission. Volkswagen's 1.9-liter TDI (diesel) four-cylinder develops 100 hp and 177 pounds-feet of torque and works with a five-speed manual or the Direct Shift Gearbox.

Safety

Antilock brakes, traction control, active front head restraints, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain-type airbags are standard. Side-impact airbags for outboard rear passengers are optional. Volkswagen's Electronic Stabilization Program is standard on all models but the Value Edition, where it is optional.

Driving Impressions

In ordinary driving, the Jetta delivers vigorous throttle response, and the automatic transmission operates effortlessly. Passing response is markedly less energetic on upgrades at higher elevations. Significant hesitation before the transmission downshifts may occur when stepping on the gas.

The Jetta feels particularly substantial, if a little on the heavy side. The suspension is definitely firm, but it doesn't impair the ride on smooth highways. Steering feel is excellent, and the Jetta stays neatly on course. With wholly predictable handling, it's simply masterful through curves. Body lean is minimal through tight mountain switchbacks.

Apart from some noticeable engine sounds while accelerating and some road noise, the Jetta is fairly quiet. The gauges are large and easy to read, and visibility is very good. The seats are beautifully cushioned and appropriately bolstered; they also offer good thigh and back support.

That's probably wise. It has been a while since the Volkswagen Jetta was genuinely embraced by performance enthusiasts, so this new sports model, the GLI, might do better on its own than forcefully dovetailed into the Jetta family.

The GLI is a Jetta, though, no denying that, but there are subtle and not-so-subtle differences. Our red test car had red-painted brake calipers (they are red no matter the exterior color), bold five-spoke alloy wheels and P225/45R-17 performance radial tires. Other differences are under the skin, such as a stiffer suspension, a lower-restriction exhaust system and xenon headlights.

Under the hood, there's a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, pumping out 200 horsepower. The more I drive Volkswagen and Audi models with this engine, the less I miss the turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, one of the smoothest little engines ever. On the test vehicle, the transmission is a sophisticated six-speed automatic that is perfectly matched to this engine. Power is not of the neck-snapping variety, but it's more than adequate.

Inside, the GLI comes standard with cloth-covered seats, but the tester had a $3,200 option package that included leather upholstery, as well as a power sunroof, Sirius satellite radio and a few other features. The automatic added $875, and with one additional option package and $615 in shipping charges, the $23,790 base price rose to $29,230. I like the stuff that comes with that $3,200 option package, but not $3,200 worth. A base model GLI with a six-speed manual transmission, at just more than $25,000, would be a bargain.

One reason: There's loads of standard equipment, including air conditioning, cruise control, stability control, antilock disc brakes, side and side-curtain air bags, a good stereo with an in-dash CD changer and full power-operated features. The GLI's interior is nicely executed in a means-business way. Front seats are excellent; rear seats are adequate for adults, but if you plan to use that rear seat a lot, consider a Passat.

And at any price level with the GLI, you still get a sweet powertrain, big tires and a beefy suspension that make the GLI beg to be taken off the expressway, onto winding back roads. Try as they might, other manufacturers just can't quite match the road feel of a good German sedan -- even a German sedan that is built in Puebla, Mexico.

The GLI is the most appealing Jetta in years. Well done, Volkswagen.

2002 Lincoln Town Car

2002 Lincoln Town Car Executive for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 6995
Miles: 115000
Description: Vehicle Overview

Lincoln’s rear-drive luxury sedan, the traditional favorite of older buyers and limousine companies, will probably earn some appearance changes for 2003. These revisions may include a raised hood to accommodate an optional 300-horsepower V-8 engine, a reworked front end with a smaller grille, a revised suspension, 17-inch tires and a bigger trunk — an improvement that limousine drivers should fully appreciate. The Town Car was last redesigned for the 1998 model year.

The Town Car is basically the last vehicle of its kind on the market. For 2002, it gets a new Vehicle Communication System (VCS) as an option. The system includes a transportable digital/analog Motorola Timeport phone with voice activation and hands-free capability. VCS offers automatic emergency service notification upon airbag deployment, route assistant, and news and information services. The 4.6-liter V-8 develops either 220 hp or 235 hp, depending on the model. Both standard-length and extended-wheelbase versions are available.

Exterior
In standard form, the Town Car rides a 117.7-inch wheelbase and measures 215.3 inches long overall — about 8 inches longer than its long-time archrival, the front-drive Cadillac DeVille. Though it is built on the same basic rear-drive platform as the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis, the Town Car is larger and displays entirely different styling, led by a waterfall vertical-bar grille.

Interior
Even in standard form, six occupants have space to stretch out in the Town Car’s wide interior. But passengers in both center positions must straddle the driveshaft tunnel and can be considerably less comfortable. Both the driver and front passenger have eight-way power-adjustable seating with power lumbar adjustment of the split bench. A memory feature controls the front seats, mirrors, and power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedal settings.

Tall, wide doors make it easy to get in and out of the Town Car. An optional easy entry/exit driver’s seat feature moves the seat rearward when necessary to ease access. The seats are trimmed in leather. In both models, the trunk holds an ample 20.6 cubic feet of cargo. Because the spare tire hangs over the forward end, much of that space consists of a deep center well that makes it difficult to load and unload the trunk.

Under the Hood
A 4.6-liter V-8 engine and four-speed-automatic transmission go into all Town Cars. The V-8 for the Executive and Signature editions produces 220 hp. Dual exhausts are added to the Cartier models and the Signature Touring Sedan (STS), and output climbs to 235 hp. All-disc antilock brakes, all-speed traction control and side-impact airbags for the front seats are standard.

Driving Impressions
The Lincoln Town Car sees plenty of service in livery fleets that hover around airports and convention centers, because it’s the only large rear-drive luxury sedan that remains on the market with a fairly reasonable price. A little smaller in size than the previous-generation Town Car of the 1990s, it’s also more agile.

Dodge’s sole offering in this segment straddles two sections of the SUV market. The Durango isn’t too big or too small; it’s larger in size than most midsize sport utility vehicles, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, with its V-8 engines and optional eight-passenger seating. It challenges full-size models like the Chevrolet Tahoe. Billed as the “right size” by Dodge, the Durango promises “full-size SUV roominess” combined with compact-level maneuverability.

A new entry-level SXT model joins the lineup for 2002. The Durango also can be equipped with step-up option packages, which include the SLT, SLT Plus and performance-oriented R/T. A new option group includes graphite front and rear fascias, grille and fender flares, as well as 16-inch aluminum wheels. Newly available curtain-type airbags for the front and second-row seats deploy from the ceiling.

Exterior
From the windshield forward, the styling on the four-door Durango is the same as the Dakota pickup truck. Its overall length is 193 inches. The R/T edition includes 17-inch tires on cast aluminum wheels, performance shock absorbers, a limited-slip differential and a performance-oriented axle ratio.

Interior
Depending on the seating configuration, the Durango seats as few as five occupants or as many as eight. Two front buckets and a three-place second-row seat are standard for five-passenger capacity. For eight-passenger seating, a three-place bench can replace the front buckets and an optionaltwo-place third-row seat can be added. The middle and rear seats fold flat for a maximum cargo volume of 88 cubic feet. A new DVD-based backseat video entertainment system is available as an option.

Under the Hood
A 235-horsepower, 4.7-liter V-8 that drives a newly enhanced five-speed-automatic transmission is the base engine, and a 250-hp, 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 that teams with a four-speed automatic is optional. The Durango comes either with rear-wheel drive or a choice of two four-wheel-drive systems. Standard 4WD cannot be used on smooth, dry pavement, but the optional 4WD system is a full-time unit. Both systems may be engaged with a dashboard-mounted switch. Antilock brakes are standard.

Driving Impressions
SUVs aren’t supposed to sound like Dodge’s sporty, performance-oriented Durango R/T edition. It emits lushly gurgling exhaust notes that would befit a sports car and sounds like it’s ready to lunge into space. The automatic transmission reacts promptly and smoothly for passing. Appealing seats offer excellent support and firm but comfortable cushioning with plenty of space for the driver and passengers, though the rear seatbacks aren’t very tall.

Vehicle Overview

The 1999 - 2004 generation of Honda's front-wheel-drive Odyssey was a class leader. For 2005, the minivan received a major redesign in Honda's attempt to leapfrog the growing competition.

Reaching beyond the foldaway third-row Magic Seat in the previous model, the 2005 Odyssey also got a stowable PlusOne seat in the second row. Side curtain-type airbags protected occupants in all three rows, and an electronic stability system became standard. The windows in the sliding doors can be partially opened.

Four trim levels are offered: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring. The top two models use a Variable Cylinder Management version of Honda's 3.5-liter V-6, which shifts automatically between six- and three-cylinder operation in response to driving conditions. A regular V-6 goes into the LX and EX.

Power ratings are slightly lower for 2006 due to new testing standards established by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Actual performance remains the same.

The Touring model is now available with a DVD entertainment system, which was previously offered only in combination with a navigation system. XM Satellite Radio is standard in Touring models, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel has been added to the EX-L. Odysseys are built in Alabama.

Exterior

Built on a 118.1-inch wheelbase, the Odyssey measures 201 inches long overall. All models have dual sliding side doors, and all but the LX have power operation on both sides. Pulling the door handle halts the power doors, and a power liftgate is available.

Touring models use Michelin PAX run-flat tires. A moonroof is standard on EX-L and Touring minivans.

Interior

Seating for seven occupants consists of two bucket seats in the first and second rows and a third-row 60/40-split bench that folds into the floor. EX models seat eight people thanks to a removable center seat in the second row that can stow into a recessed compartment. When the seat isn't stowed, a Lazy Susan under-floor tray holds miscellaneous items. Adjustable pedals are available in Touring models, and the gearshift lever sits on the console.

An available DVD-based rear entertainment system uses a 9-inch screen. Honda's navigation system operates with voice recognition, can respond to 637 commands, and understands street names, numbers and destinations.

Under the Hood

Honda's 244-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 teams with a five-speed-automatic transmission. In EX-L and Touring models, the Variable Cylinder Management V-6 switches operation automatically between three and six cylinders. Both engines generate 240 pounds-feet of torque, but at slightly different engine speeds.

Audi redesigned its compact, entry-level A4 midway through the 2005 model year by giving it a larger engine with direct fuel injection. The A4 continues to be offered in sedan, wagon (Avant) and convertible versions.

Each body style comes in 2.0T form with a turbocharged four-cylinder or in 3.2 guise with a V-6.

Sedans and Cabriolets are available with FrontTrak front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive. The Avant wagon comes only with quattro.

The A4 lineup includes a 3.2 quattro sedan, an Avant wagon with a six-speed manual transmission and a 3.2 front-drive sedan with Audi's multitronic continuously variable transmission. A new S-line series includes a sport suspension, trunklid lip spoiler, sporty side sills and brushed-aluminum interior trim. A hill-hold function has been added to all CVT models.

Exterior

"Unmistakably Audi" is how the German automaker describes its smaller series, flaunting the brand's sporty character. Clear-glass headlights have sweeping lower edges and an inward taper. Body-colored bumpers are said to accentuate the car's low center of gravity. Visibly flared wheel arches round out the picture.

Standard tires on 2.0T models measure 16 inches in diameter, but 17-inch tires are installed on models with the V-6 engine. For 2007, those 16-inchers have been redesigned. Xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, a moonroof and Parktronic rear park assist are available. Optional adaptive headlights can pivot 15 degrees.

Interior

Sedans and wagons seat five people and have four-way power lumbar support. The seat cushions have prominent bolsters. Standard equipment includes automatic dual-zone air conditioning. Leather seating surfaces are included in 3.2 models. The available Audi Navigation Plus system has a 5-inch video screen.

Under the Hood

A 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powers 2.0T models. An aluminum 255-hp, 3.1-liter V-6 is installed in 3.2 editions. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard in all models except the 3.2 FrontTrak. The multitronic CVT is available only in models equipped with FrontTrak, but sedans and wagons with quattro all-wheel drive can have a six-speed Tiptronic automatic that permits manual gear selection.

Safety

Side curtain airbags deploy from above the side windows. Side-impact airbags for front occupants are standard, and rear-seat airbags are optional. Audi's Electronic Stabilization Program incorporates Brake Assist.

Driving Impressions

The A4 is solid and appealing, joyfully tackling twisting roads and taking every turn in stride. Despite a taut suspension, the ride is magnificent on smooth roads and recovery is swift when you hit a bump. Ride quality is nearly as good with the available sport suspension.

Plenty of power hails from the V-6, in a civilized manner. Strong performance with the turbocharged four-cylinder is devoid of turbo lag, and it's a tad more spirited. The manual gearbox shifts easily, and Audi's automatic transmission works without any harshness.

Audi's ultra-smooth multitronic CVT works masterfully and subtly. After slight hesitation during takeoff, the car moves ahead with some haste. You hear a little engine noise while accelerating with the CVT, but not much.

If you're looking for similarities between the 2007 Toyota Camry and the Toyota Camrys that will compete Sunday at the Daytona 500, I'll list them below:

The name.

Of course, that's the case with the NASCAR Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Dodge Charger, too. Front and rear decals that are supposed to look like lights, and plastic side windows that may or may not remind you of the actual street car, and that's pretty much it. Fans convinced that these are real Toyotas and Fords and Dodges and Chevrolets on the racetrack might also be disappointed to learn that, according to highly placed sources, professional wrestling might be choreographed.

Toyota executives are on record as saying that they are racing the Camry in NASCAR Nextel Cup not so much to sell more Camrys but to sell more Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. If they sell more Camrys, fine, but that might be difficult: Toyota sold 448,445 in 2006, making it, again, the best-selling car in the U.S. The Honda Accord was second, at 354,441. In a year when most everyone posted a downturn, including the Accord, Camry sales were up in 2006.

It's easy to see why. Perhaps more successfully than any other car, the Camry seeks to be all things to all buyers.

At the other end is the Camry XLE, which can be loaded with enough equipment to send the price tag well past $30,000, essentially making it a less-expensive Lexus ES350, which is based on the Camry.

In between the CE and XLE, there's the meat of the market with the Camry LE, offered with either the 2.4-liter four-cylinder or the 3.5-liter V-6. There's even a Camry hybrid, and if you want a coupe, there's the Camry Solara.

The test model was the Camry SE, the sportiest of the Camry sedans with P215/55-R17 Michelin radials on spoked alloy wheels, fog lights and what Toyota calls a "sport suspension," but it still leans more toward a smooth ride than crisp handling. Certainly the SE handles quite well, but the numb, too-light steering erases the sporty pretense.

The engine and transmission, however, are tough to fault, though in very cold weather the six-speed automatic behaved oddly until the fluid warmed. The V-6 engine is smooth and powerful, and the EPA rating -- 22 miles per gallon city, 31 mpg highway -- was very close to our actual numbers.

Inside, the cockpit is easily the best of any Camry yet. Leather bucket seats are comfortable, even on long trips. The rear seat is roomy for two adults, adequate for three. Instruments and controls are excellent, but give Honda a decided edge on the optional navigation system.

With some options, including a power sunroof, XM satellite radio and stability control, the SE's base price of $24,815 rose to a sobering $31,444, but this was, after all, pretty much a Lexus with a Toyota badge.

To me, the Accord remains more fun to drive, but this new-for-2007 Camry is a genuine step up from the previous generation. How well will its namesake do on the racetrack? We'll find out Sunday.

This car has the comfort of a cruise ship, and all that's lacking is white-clad waiters bringing food and drink.

With a car such as this one, you could ride in the spacious back seat while someone did the driving for you, and enjoy food, libations and the car's excellent audio system.

Don't permanently relegate yourself to the back seat, though. Our test vehicle, as comfy and cushy as it was, offered a bit of driving fun, too. You might want to take the helm (before imbibing) for at least part of your journey.

As for the DTS in general, this is the car that Cadillac called the DeVille until last year, when it was significantly upgraded and renamed.

For 2007, the DTS, comes with a few enhancements. Among new standard equipment this year are chrome wheels, which come with new center caps featuring the Cadillac wreath-and-crest badge in color.

GM says options such as XM satellite radio, a cargo mat and rear sunshades - previously offered only in the most-expensive packages, are now more readily available. Some changes in exterior colors have been made for '07, as well. And inside, the dark Cashmere accent and aniline leather have been replaced with a cocoa hue, Cadillac said. In addition, the center stack is now dark argent metallic.

A new Cadillac key fob makes its debut as well, not only with the DTS but on several other Cadillac models as well.

And indicative of GM's expanding global marketing of Cadillac, the navigation system now is offered with maps for Korea and Taiwan, and Arabic is available as one of the languages on the driver-information center, replacing Italian. The analog clock on the instrument panel also been improved to make it easier to read.

Just as with the DeVille, the DTS is aimed almost entirely at the over-60 crowd, with no obvious features to appeal to younger buyers except for the performance package. This is understandable, as Cadillac already has a full stable of new vehicles designed for younger buyers.

The DeVille became the DTS to follow the same pattern as the other alphabet names of recent new Cadillac cars - such as CTS, SRX, XLR, STS - but otherwise remained much the big boat that its predecessor was. It also retained its front-wheel drive, while all of the other Cadillacs now come with rear- or all-wheel drive.

Some restyling was involved with the change to the DTS, even though its overall look is clearly DeVille-like. The "art and science" design theme of other recent Cadillacs is evident in the front and rear of the DTS. The front end has all-new sheet metal, along with a new grille, fascia and high-intensity-discharge Xenon headlamps. Cadillac says that the deck lid, rear quarter panels, rear fascia and taillights also are new.

Inside, the DTS has new seats that GM says are "optimally engineered for comfort and support"; a new instrument panel; and new wood trim.

Standard or optional high-tech features include four-channel antilock brakes and traction control, four-channel StabiliTrak with brake assist, and Magnetic Ride Control.

As for the stated fuel-economy ratings, many DeVille owners have reported getting even better highway mileage than the EPA estimates suggest. That's probably because these are drivers who usually take it easy and conserve fuel with their driving habits.

We earlier tested the DTS with the base 275-horsepower engine, and found it to be quite peppy and certainly more than adequate for this heavy car, which weights just over two tons..

Neither model of the DTS offers the sporty driving experience of the smaller STS and CTS sedans or SRX wagon. This car trades suspension stiffness for a softer ride to accommodate its older consumers.

Chassis tuning "focused on achieving a smooth, quiet, refined ride," the company says. Not that the previous version didn't already have that, mind you. The new one is just better, and even on some

Vehicle Overview

After four decades on the market, Ford's "pony car" is entering a new generation. Ford introduced the 2005 Mustang at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Last redesigned in 1999, it's the last of the traditional rear-wheel-drive pony cars.

The new model's styling cues are borrowed from Mustangs of the 1960s, but it is built with a new, fully modern architecture. "The Mustang is more modern, more livable and safer, without losing its street swagger," Ford says. The automaker promises even more attitude in the latest Mustang, noting that its "menacing sharklike nose imparts an attitude not seen since the 1967 model."

Two engines are available: a 210-horsepower V-6 and a 300-hp V-8 for the Mustang GT. "The new Mustang is pure American muscle," said J Mays, Ford's vice president of design. The Mustang coupe goes on sale in the fall of 2004.

Exterior

The 2005 Mustang's wheelbase has grown by 6 inches. According to Ford, the wheels were pushed to the corners, but the car's signature long hood and short deck remain. The new coupe features a classic fastback profile.

Styling touches from the past include C-scoops in the sides, tri-bar (three-element) taillamps and a "galloping horse" badge in the center of the forward-leaning grille. Jeweled round headlights sit in trapezoidal housings. An accent line runs the full length of the body, culminating in the "C-scoop" shape just behind the door. Earlier Mustangs had louvers or scoops in the C-pillar, but the 2005 model gets a small triangular window instead.

Built on a 107.1-inch wheelbase, the 2005 Mustang is 187.6 inches long overall and 54.5 inches tall. The Mustang's suspension consists of MacPherson struts in the front and a three-link live axle with a Panhard rod at the rear. Aluminum-spoked wheels hold 17-inch tires on the GT, but the base V-6 Mustang gets 16-inch rubber.

Interior

Mustangs seat four occupants on front and rear bucket seats. Three design themes will be available, and they include what Ford says is the industry's first color-configurable instrument panel, which can display more than 125 different background colors.

Aluminum dashboard trim panels can be installed. Chrome-ringed air vents are aligned across the dashboard precisely in line with the large barrel-style gauges. The three-spoke steering wheel has a black hub with the Mustang horse and tri-color logo. An optional Color Accent Package features charcoal with red leather seats, red door inserts and red floormats.

Standard equipment includes power windows and mirrors, keyless entry, interval wipers and a heated rear window. A CD player is standard, but audio options extend all the way to a 1,000-watt Shaker Audiophile system. Trunk space amounts to 13.1 cubic feet in the coupe and 9.7 cubic feet in the convertible.

Under the Hood

The 2005 Mustang gets a choice of engines. The new single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V-6 produces 210 hp. A 4.6-liter all-aluminum V-8 in the GT pumps out 300 hp and 320 pounds-feet of torque. The V-8 engine, which has three-valve cylinder heads, runs on regular gasoline.

The engines work with either a standard five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic. A true dual exhaust system with 2.5-inch mandrel bent stainless-steel pipes is installed on the Mustang GT.

Safety

Side-impact airbags are optional. Antilock brakes are standard on the GT and optional on the V-6 model. Ford's Personal Safety System features dual-stage front airbags.

Driving Impressions

The latest Mustang is more refined than its predecessor. Models with the V-6 are good, but those equipped with V-8 power are better yet. Steering has a satisfying and confident feel that's especially appealing on twisty roads.

Suspension differences between the two models aren't dramatic, but the GT is considerably more sure-footed. Its ride is no rougher than that of

For its third year on the market, Hyundai’s sport utility vehicle gets several enhancements. Standard side-impact airbags are one of those significant changes. A Monsoon sound system with a six-CD changer joins the options list, and a HomeLink remote control unit is built into the sun visor and console.

During the 2002 model year, all-disc brakes and a higher-level stereo were added, and the SUV was upgraded with a revised dashboard and center stack, a reworked overhead console and a new power sunroof. Gas-charged struts also replaced the previous hood prop rod.

The Santa Fe is based on the front-wheel-drive (FWD) Sonata sedan platform. The SUV’s rivals include such car-based SUVs as the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4.

The Santa Fe comes in three trim levels: GL, GLS and LX. In the spring of 2001, the compact SUV earned a Good crash-test rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), beating the Escape and RAV4.

Exterior
Roughly the same size as Honda’s first-generation CR-V, the Santa Fe is 177.2 inches long overall and close to 66 inches tall. It rides on a 103.1-inch wheelbase. Ford’s Escape has the same wheelbase but is 4 inches shorter overall. The Santa Fe’s bulging front fenders are similar to the ones used on the Tiburon sport coupe. The four-door SUV is equipped with a rear liftgate and standard 16-inch tires.

Interior
The Santa Fe holds five occupants with front bucket seats and a three-place, split rear bench that folds for additional cargo space. Cargo volume behind the rear seat is 29 cubic feet, and that number grows to 78 cubic feet when the backseat is folded down. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, a CD player, and power windows and door locks. The step-up GLS edition adds such features as remote keyless entry, fog lights and a cassette/CD stereo system. Leather upholstery, automatic climate control and heated front seats are part of the top-of-the-line LX version.

Under the Hood
A 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 181 horsepower and teams with a four-speed-automatic transmission in the GL V-6, GLS and LX models. The automatic transmission has manual-shifting capability. Used in the base GL edition, the Santa Fe’s 149-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mates with a standard five-speed-manual transmission.

FWD and permanently engaged all-wheel drive (AWD) are available — the latter is intended to provide extra grip on slippery highway surfaces rather than for use on serious offroad treks. AWD sends 60 percent of the power to the front wheels and 40 percent to the rear wheels. No Low range is included.

Safety
Side-impact airbags are standard for 2003. Antilock brakes are standard on the LX model.

Driving Impressions
The Santa Fe is one of the friendliest and easiest of the smaller SUVs to drive, and it handles adeptly and performs admirably. Its bulging fenders, which are uncommon on SUVs, actually make a difference in judging the vehicle’s position. This SUV is appropriately spacious, and it runs quietly. It also delivers an appealing ride

2003 Audi A4

Not only did the A4 gain a larger V-6 engine choice, but it could also be equipped with an innovative multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Both the sedan and wagon body styles come in 1.8T form with a turbocharged engine or in 3.0 guise with the V-6 power plant. With the exception of the new A4 Cabriolet convertible, changes for 2003 to Audi’s smaller sedan and wagon are modest. New leather seating inserts are available, and 17-inch tires are optional for the 1.8T and 3.0 models. The outer rear seating positions get LATCH child-safety seat lower anchors and tethers. Option packages have been restructured. Automatic transmissions gain an interlock between the “D” and “S” modes, and the Bose Premium sound system now features Audio Pilot technology.

Also available in the midsize A6, the CVT promises greater fuel efficiency than a regular automatic transmission. Rather than have it deliver a totally continuous range, engineers incorporated a series of “steps” in the CVT to make its operation feel more like that of a regular automatic transmission. The available Tiptronic automatic transmission incorporates a Sport mode.

The A4 is Audi’s top-selling model, with 35,379 units sold during 2001, according to Automotive News. The A4 competes against the BMW 3 Series, Jaguar X-Type, Lexus IS 300 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Exterior
The 2002 redesign gave Audi’s top seller a more rigid body and some styling themes adapted from the round-profile TT sport coupe and the midsize A6, but the A4 is more angular at the rear. A trapezoidal-link independent rear suspension is installed. According to Audi’s Marc Trahan, the A4’s base suspension “is essentially equal to” a sport suspension on prior models. Aluminum belt line trim on the 1.8T models has been replaced by high-gloss fiberglass trim.

The A4 sedan rides a 104.3-inch wheelbase, stands 56.2 inches tall and extends to 179 inches long overall. Standard tires on sedan and wagon models measure 15 inches in diameter with the turbocharged engine and 16 inches with the V-6. Seventeen-inch cast-alloy wheels, a lowered sport suspension, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and a sunroof are optional. A Parktronic rear parking-assistance system is also available.

Interior
The A4 sedan and wagon seat five occupants in twin buckets upfront and has four-way power lumbar support. The seat cushions have prominent bolsters, and a four-position memory feature for the driver’s seat is optional. The seat cushions have prominent bolsters. The 3.0 wagons get 12-way power front seats. Space in the front seat is ample, but the backseat lacks legroom for tall riders.

A multifunction steering wheel is newly available for the 3.0 sedan. Later in the model year, a power driver’s seat will become available for the 1.8T. An Audi Telematics system by OnStar is optional for all models. Audi’s navigation system, which works without a video-screen map, is also available.

Standard equipment on all sedand and wagons includes automatic dual-zone climate control, an Immobilizer II anti-theft system, and a Symphony II radio with an in-dash six-CD changer and 10-speaker sound system.

Under the Hood
A turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower goes into 1.8T versions of the A4. An aluminum 220-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 is installed in 3.0 editions.

A five-speed-manual gearbox is standard with the turbocharged engine in the A4, while the V-6 mates with a six-speed manual. The CVT unit is available only in A4 models equipped with FrontTrak, but sedans with quattro AWD may be equipped with a five-speed Tiptronic automatic. All wagons get quattro AWD.

Safety
Standard curtain-type airbags deploy from above the side windows and cover the entire side-window area. They stay inflated for about 5 seconds to provide head protection in rollovers. Si

Aluminum is used for the hood, and Jaguar says considerably tighter panel fits appear on this version than on prior models. Jaguar made the S-Type more rigid for diesel-engine applications in Europe, and American models benefit as well. For the first time on the S-Type, the interior could be trimmed with high-tech aluminum rather than traditional wood trim.

Positioned between the company's compact X-Type and full-size XJ in size and price, the S-Type comes in three versions with distinct engines: a 3.0-liter V-6, a 4.2-liter V-8 or a supercharged V-8 for the S-Type R.

For the 2006 model year, Jaguar's 4.2-liter V-8 earns a boost to 300 horsepower, while the supercharged R delivers 400 hp. Like other Jaguar models, the S-Type gets a chrome mesh grille. A new Conti-Teves foundation braking system promises improved stopping distance and pedal feel. Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth wireless technology are available.

Exterior

The S-Type's grille is lower than on pre-2005 models, and it sits more upright. Displaying a round Jaguar badge, it incorporates horizontal vanes and slim vertical chrome vanes. Round taillamps help display what Jaguar calls a "more technical look [and] more presence." Alloy wheels hold 17-inch tires (18-inch on R models).

Mesh inserts are fitted in place of fog lamps in the S-Type R to allow air to reach the car's twin oil coolers. The R edition also features a trunk spoiler, twin tailpipes and Jaguar's Enhanced Computer Active Technology Suspension, which uses adjustable dampers. R models feature standard xenon headlights with automatic self-leveling.

Interior

Five occupants fit inside, and the driver faces chronograph-style dials. Dual-zone climate control and an electrically adjustable steering column are standard. Satellite navigation, adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers, Front Park Assist and adaptive cruise control are optional, but all S-Type sedans have Reverse Park Control. The electric parking brake features an incline sensor.

Under the Hood

Jaguar's 3.0-liter V-6 produces 235 hp, and the 4.2-liter V-8 generates 300 hp. The supercharged V-8 in the S-Type yields 400 hp — sufficient to yield a 0-to-60-mph acceleration time of 5.3 seconds. All three versions use a ZF six-speed-automatic transmission. Traction control is standard.

Safety

In addition to side-impact and side curtain-type airbags, the S-Type features Jaguar's Adaptive Restraint Technology System. Antilock brakes include emergency brake assist, and Dynamic Stability Control is standard.

Driving Impressions

Road behavior is especially appealing in the S-Type R, but all models deliver a refined motoring experience. Acceleration with the R's supercharged engine is smooth and easy, sending the sedan to passing speeds promptly and effortlessly.

Body lean in curves is barely noticeable. The S-Type R stays as flat as any reasonable sedan owner could want. Ride quality beats many performance sedans, though stiffness can be noticed when passing over some holes and bumps. On slightly wavy pavement, the ride is smooth. Some tire noise is apparent on certain road surfaces. The seats are snugly bolstered and highly supportive, though cushioning in the S-Type R seems a tad below par.

Styling cues are borrowed from Mustangs of the 1960s, and Ford calls the new Mustang "more modern, more livable and safer," and says it's managed that without losing its "street swagger." For 2007, the lineup has been expanded to include the high-performance Ford Shelby GT500. As with other Mustangs, the GT500 will be offered as both a coupe and a convertible.

For 2007, Ford adds a standard audio input jack. Sirius Satellite Radio and heated front seats are now available, and a DVD navigation system will be offered later in the model year. Two new exterior colors are also available: Grabber Orange Clearcoat Metallic and Alloy Clearcoat Metallic.

A new California Special edition is exclusively available for uplevel GT models. It includes 18-inch wheels, side scoops, black-leather-trimmed seats, a lower chin spoiler, a larger air intake and unique front and rear fascias.

Exterior

A new appearance package for 2007 features rolled exhaust tips, an engine cover with a Pony emblem and a hood scoop. In its modern form, the Mustang's wheels are pushed to the corners, but the car's signature long hood and short deck remain. Coupes feature a classic fastback profile.

Styling touches from the past include C-scoops in the sides, tri-bar taillamps and a "galloping horse" badge within the forward-leaning grille. Jeweled round headlights sit in trapezoidal housings. Aluminum-spoked wheels hold 17-inch tires on the GT, but V6 Mustangs get 16-inch rubber. The GT is available with four wheel and tire combinations.

An available Pony Package gives V6 models a GT-inspired suspension with larger wheels and tires, antilock brakes, traction control and a custom grille with fog lamps.

Interior

For 2007, a Comfort Group Package is available on V6 and GT models. It includes an electrochromatic mirror with a compass, as well as heated front seats and a six-way power passenger seat.

Mustangs seat four occupants on front and rear bucket seats.

An available color-configurable instrument panel can display more than 125 background colors. Chrome-ringed air vents align with large barrel-style gauges. The three-spoke steering wheel has a black hub with the Mustang horse and tri-color logo.

Standard equipment includes keyless entry, interval wipers, cruise control, a heated rear window, and power windows, locks and mirrors. A CD player is standard, but the GT Premium flaunts its Shaker 500 audio system. Trunk space is 13.1 cubic feet in the coupe.

Under the Hood

Ford's 4.0-liter V-6 produces 210 horsepower. A 4.6-liter all-aluminum V-8 in the GT pumps out 300 hp and 320 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines run on regular gasoline and work with either a five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic.

Safety

Side-impact airbags are optional. Antilock brakes with traction control are standard on the GT and optional on V6 models. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard, and an anti-theft system featuring interior motion sensors is optional.

Driving Impressions

The latest Mustang is more refined than its predecessor. Steering has a satisfying, confident feel that's especially appealing on twisty roads.

Suspension differences between the two models aren't dramatic, but the GT is considerably more sure-footed. Its ride is no rougher, and the overall experience is more civilized. The GT's steering response is more agreeable, too — well-behaved through curves, with little correction needed on straightaways.

Performance is vigorous with the V-8. Exhaust noise from the V-8 can be intrusive, but only when accelerating hard.

It features a redesigned exterior, interior, frame, and suspension as well as a power increases on certain engines. It takes styling cues from the 2007 GMT900 SUVs and the Chevrolet Colorado pickups. Like the GMT900 SUVs, these pickups also have greatly improved aerodynamics over their predecessors like steeply raked windshields and tighter panel gaps which improve fuel economy. The GMT800 models were continued in 2007 badged as "Classic", just as the GMT400 models continued for a year after the GMT800's introduction.
The new Silverado earned the North American Truck of the Year award for 2007 and was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 2007. Like its predecessors, the new Silverado offers buyers a choice of two door regular cabs, four door extended cabs (with rear doors that now open 170 degrees similar to the Nissan Titan) and four door crew cabs with the rear doors opening in the same direction as the front doors. GM also offers the trucks in the traditional two and four wheel drive configurations.
The Generation III small block V8 engines offered in the GMT 800 trucks will be replaced in the GMT 900 series by the Generation IV small block V8 engine family, featuring upgrades such as increased power and Active Fuel Management on the 5.3 L and 6.0 L V8s.

Designed from the outset as a sturdy convertible, as opposed to a coupé that was subsequently weakened by the removal of the roof structure, the car now had a hydroformed box frame. The transmission was moved to the rear of the car to form an integrated, rear-mounted transaxle assembly which was connected to the all-new LS1 engine via a torque tube; this engine/transmission arrangement helped facilitate a desirable 50-50 (percentage, front-rear) weight distribution for the vehicle. The LS1 engine initially produced 345 hp, but that was increased slightly in 2001 to 350 hp. The 4L60-E automatic transmission carried on from previous models, but the manual was replaced by a Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed that is capable of propelling the C5 to a top speed of 170 mph. Gone were the squeaks and rattles of the C4, replaced by a stronger frame that would last for at least two more generations. By all measures, the new C5 was better in every aspect than the C4 it replaced.

Aside from cosmetic differences (new wheel styles, paint colors, pace car/commemorative editions in 1998, 2003, and 2004, etc.), horsepower boosts, and new offerings for optional equipment, there were few fundamental changes from one model year to the next within the production run of the C5. One of the more popular "high-tech" options introduced to the Corvette line was a head-up display or HUD, while another innovation was the Active Handling System (first available as an option in 1998, then standard on all models in 2001). The C5 was also the first Corvette to incorporate a drive-by-wire throttle; and variable-effort steering, whereby the assist level of the power steering is varied according to vehicle speed (more at lower speeds, less at higher speeds).

In contrast to the reputation of high-performance vehicles for poor fuel economy, the C5 achieves comparatively high EPA ratings of 18/25 mpg (city/highway) with the automatic transmission and 19/28 with the manual transmission, allowing it to avoid the "gas guzzler" tax that is levied against most other vehicles in the Corvette's class. A number of factors are responsible for this: the relatively light weight of the C5 (a curb weight under 3,300 lb) Chevrolet went so far as to omit the spare tire as a weight-saving measure, relying upon run-flat tires instead); the C5's low drag coefficient; and the vehicle's tendency to upshift into the higher gears as soon as possible. The manual transmission's Computer-Aided Gear Shifting results in an obligatory shift from 1st gear directly into 4th gear under certain driving conditions; the system can be inhibited through the use of an aftermarket device.
Suspension choices for the base model C5 were limited to the standard suspension (RPO FE1), with options for either the autocross-inspired FE3 Sport Suspension (included with the Z51 Performance & Handling Package and standard on the 1999-2000 FRC); or the F45 Selective Ride Control Suspension, which permitted "on-the-fly" driver selection of different ride characteristics (sport or touring).

The Explorer saw significant exterior, interior and suspension updates in 1995. The former "Twin Traction Beam" (TTB) front suspension was replaced with a more carlike independent front suspension. The Explorer lineup now consisted of two models: 2-door Explorer Sport and the 4-door Explorer. The Limited was a higher end 4-door. Selectable part-time/full-time ControlTrac 4-wheel-drive débuted with a two-speed transfer case featuring three-modes, Auto, 4 High and 4 Low.
A 210 hp (157 kW) 5.0 L Windsor V8 engine and heavy-duty 4-speed 4R70W transmission were added for 1996, along with a "full time" all-wheel drive system on the Eddie Bauer and Limited in 1997. A more-powerful SOHC 205 hp (153 kW) V6 engine came as an option in 1996 along with an optional 5-speed automatic. A Mercury twin, the Mountaineer, was added in 1997 as well. In early 1997, the 5.0 L V8 received new cylinder heads (GT-40P series), which upped power to 215 hp (160 kw). Since this change was made in the middle of the 1997 release, the 1997 GT-40P equipped Explorers and Mountaineers were dubbed 1997¼ models. The 5.0 L V8 powered Explorer has become favored in the high performance SUV crowd, with many performance parts available. This is due to the fact that many aftermarket 5.0 L Ford Mustang parts are interchangeable with the Explorer variant. Also, the Explorer has aftermarket parts available for it including superchargers, nitrous kits, and headers. It was the first in its segment to introduce driver and passenger air bags at once.[citation needed]

1998–2001 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer
The 1995 Explorer was the first production vehicle to use a neon center high mount stop lamp. This was replaced with a more conventional LED lamp when the liftgate was refreshed in 1998. A slight change in front end design came in 1999, at which time the XLS name replaced XL as the base model.

M A N Y MODIFICATIONS:
FASTEST GTO we have ever offered for sale.

If anything has happened to your vehicle during your absence, LC3 spells out what happened when you unlock your doors: “Shock Sensor” for example.

Few model names evoke the muscle-car era of the 1960s and early 1970s like the GTO. Introduced as a 1964 offshoot of the Tempest, Pontiac's original GTO quickly captured the attention of youthful drivers who craved a strong V-8 engine and performance-oriented adds-ons in a comparatively lightweight body. Production of the original GTO lasted until 1974, and more than half a million were built.

After an absence of three decades, the legendary GTO makes a comeback as a 2004 model. Based on the Australian-built Holden Monaro performance coupe, the revived GTO appeared in 2003 as a show car at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show and Detroit's North American International Auto Show. The unveiling took place just seven months after GM announced at the New York International Auto Show that it would bring back the GTO in the 21st century.

Like the originals, the new GTO has rear-wheel drive and a V-8 engine that is adapted from the LS1 V-8 used in base-level Chevrolet Corvettes. For GTO use, the engine has been given a high-lift camshaft and increased airflow induction, which results in greater horsepower and low-end torque than the Holden Monaro provides. A six-speed-manual gearbox and a Hydra-Matic transmission will be available, and both will work with a 3.46-1 final drive ratio.

Pontiac says the GTO will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with the six-speed manual and reach speeds as high as 160 mph. As many as 18,000 GTOs will be produced annually at GM's plant in Australia.

Exterior

While developing the GTO, General Motors has shunned any sort of retro look, opting instead for a contemporary appearance that doesn't stray appreciably from the Holden Monaro. In show-car form, the GTOs were painted with special high-gloss red or yellow paint. Though it is basically a Monaro underneath, the coupe features a Pontiac signature dual-port grille. A wide, aggressive stance clearly suggests the nature of the performance coupe. Alloy wheels hold 18-inch tires.

Interior

Four adults can fit inside the GTO, which has 2+2 bucket seating. Black leather upholstery is standard, but hues that match the car's body will be available. The GTO's color-coordinated interior extends into the door panels and instrument cluster. The GTO show car seen in early 2003 featured metal pedals with black grips and a silver and black steering wheel.

A six-CD changer coupled with a premium 10-speaker sound system, cruise control, keyless entry and a multifunction drive information center are standard.

Under the Hood

A specially tuned LS1 aluminum-block 5.7-liter V-8 engine generates 350 hp at 5,200 rpm and 365 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Two transmissions will be available: GM's 4L60-E four-speed Hydra-Matic unit or a close-ratio six-speed-manual gearbox that is also used for the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. A three-channel traction control system and a limited-slip differential are included.

Safety

Antilock brakes and three-point safety belts for all seating positions are standard.

2001 Mercedes-Benz SL Class SL500 for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 16900
Miles: 70100
Description: The most costly of the Mercedes-Benz sports cars and a member of the lineup for the longest time, the luxurious SL series is awaiting a substantial redesign. That won’t happen for another year or two, so the SL500 and SL600 carry on into 2001 with new “aerodynamic” lower-body styling, courtesy of AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s performance division. AMG two-piece wheels are installed on the SL600 this season. Standard on both is the Tele Aid emergency communication system, which adds several new features including vehicle diagnostics, remote door unlocking and alarm monitoring. These services are available 24 hours a day from the Tele Aid assistance center.

At the high end of the roadster scale, the principal competitors for the SL include the Jaguar XK8 convertible, the Porsche 911 Carrera cabriolet and even the more costly Aston Martin DB7. While the SL600 commands a $128,950 tariff, an SL500 can be driven home for a mere $83,800.

Exterior
AMG has given the SL a more dashing look with this year’s lower-body revision, but the SL has looked basically the same for quite a few years. A plush bigger brother to the SLK, the SL has been around since 1990 in this form — a familiar figure in the high-dollar sports-car league.

Both a soft-top and a removable aluminum hardtop are included with the purchase of an SL. Pushing a single button on the console lowers the car’s side windows, releases the fabric top from the windshield and folds back the top into a storage well at the rear. At that point, it’s covered automatically by a hard tonneau.

An Adaptive Damping System that is standard on the SL600 and optional on the SL500 automatically varies shock-absorber firmness to suit changing road conditions. Front and rear fog lights are installed. Both models can have an optional Panorama hardtop with a heat-reflecting glass roof and power sunshade. An available Sport Package includes high-performance tires on 18-inch wheels. Standard rubber is 17 inches on alloy wheels.

Interior
Both occupants can luxuriate in Nappa leather bucket seats, which are upgraded and heated in the SL600. Standard equipment includes automatic air conditioning, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with memory, 10-way power seats with memory, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift lever, cruise control and a Bose cassette stereo system with CD changer. Heated power mirrors are equipped with a memory. Also standard are wood-framed shift gates, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, a universal garage-door opener and rain-sensing variable intermittent wipers. In addition to V-12 power, the SL600 gets a leather-wrapped/wood steering wheel and gearshift knob, six-CD changer, Motorola integrated cellular phone with voice control, Adaptive Damping System and xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with automatic leveling. The Motorola phone is an option for the SL500.

Under the Hood
The SL500 is still equipped with the 302-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 engine. Buyers must pay a hefty premium to move up to the SL600, which has a 6.0-liter V-12 that produces 389 hp. Both engines drive a five-speed-automatic transmission.

Safety
Quite an array of safety equipment greets SL occupants. Door-mounted side-impact airbags, antilock brakes and the Electronic Stability Program are standard. The BabySmart feature prevents the front passenger’s airbag from activating if a small child is seated in that position. A roll bar behind the cockpit pops up when sensors detect an impending rollover. Mercedes-Benz’s Brake Assist system also is included, which helps to reduce stopping distances in emergency situations.

Driving Impressions
Is it possible to mix seriously sporty performance with posh trappings? With its SL series, Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated for years that the two qualities of motoring can coexist neatly. Whether you’re sitting behind a V-8 engine or the luscious V-12, energetic acceleration awaits at the mere tap of the gas pedal.

A front armrest and a headrest in the center rear seat are standard for the 2003 model year. A rain sensor with an automatic headlight control has been added to the Premium Package. BMW’s optional navigation system has been upgraded to DVD-based operation and can now be installed along with an in-dash CD player.

In addition to the four-door 330i, the lineup includes a 330Ci coupe and convertible. Unlike the 325, there is no wagon in the 330 Series.

Because of the company’s sporty image and its reputation for quality, 3 Series models have been popular among first-time luxury-car buyers. BMW’s most popular line competes against the Audi A4, Jaguar X-Type, Lexus IS 300 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Exterior
The 330 sedans and coupes look alike at a glance, but they share no body panels. The coupe’s styling also serves the convertible model. BMW’s familiar look features four round headlamps and a twin-kidney grille, but the sedan’s front end is different.

The coupe and convertible are 176.7 inches long overall, while the sedan measures 176 inches in length. All 330 models have a 107.3-inch wheelbase. The windshields on the coupe and convertible are slanted 2 degrees more than the sedan’s windshield. Convertible models have a power folding top.

Interior
The 330 sedans hold five passengers, while the coupe and convertible are four-seaters. Space is ample up front with twin bucket seats, but passengers can’t stretch their legs in the backseat. A typical BMW dashboard has large, easy-to-read gauges. Simple stereo and climate control push-buttons are in easy reach.

Under the Hood
BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine cranks out 225 horsepower and teams with a five-speed-manual or five-speed-automatic transmission that has a provision for manual gear changes.

Safety
Side-impact and side curtain-type airbags for the front seats are standard. Rear-seat side-impact airbags are optional in the sedan. The front airbags deploy with less force in low-speed impacts. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control reduces engine power and applies the brakes to prevent skids.

Driving Impressions
Plenty of enthusiast drivers still consider BMW the standard by which other makes are judged. At a time when luxury amenities are promoted, BMW stresses the dynamic handling qualities of its automobiles. Athletic maneuvers are the norm in both ordinary and demanding driving.

Both 3 Series models promise spirited performance and crisp handling, but the 330 delivers greater exuberance than its 325 companion. But performance of the 325 will satisfy many owners. The 3.0-liter engine actually feels so strong that it almost has to be restrained a bit.

BMW’s manual gearshift is sheer joy to manipulate. The 330’s clutch behavior is performance oriented, so getting truly smooth takeoffs takes some practice.

Rear- and all-wheel-drive models are available, and a weight-distributing trailer hitch is included. The rear-drive model can tow up to 7,400 pounds, and all-wheel-drive Escalades can tow as much as 8,100 pounds.

Known as the 1500 HD, the Crew Cab model combines the look of the half-ton LS or LT trims with a three-quarter-ton frame. Equipped with a 300-horsepower V-8 engine, it’s the only Silverado with a Crew Cab configuration. The 1500 HD has a payload capacity of up to 3,143 pounds, and it can tow as much as 10,300 pounds. Regular half-ton models have a choice of three engines: one V-6 and two different V-8s.

GMC’s Sierra pickups are similar, but they are available with Quadrasteer four-wheel steering. Quadrasteer is scheduled to become available for the Silverado during the 2002 model year.

This report covers light-duty versions of the Silverado only, which come in 1500 (half-ton) and 2500 (three-quarter-ton) series. Heavy-duty models are covered separately in the Silverado HD report.

Exterior
Offered in base, LS and LT trim levels, the Silverado comes in four sizes: regular cab or extended cab, each of which come with either a 6.5- or 8-foot cargo bed. Five wheelbases are available and range from 119 to 157.5 inches. Fleetside (slab-sided) cargo beds are standard, but a Sportside design with a flared rear fender is optional. Front-end styling matches that of Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Suburban sport utility vehicles, which are built from the same basic design.

All extended-cab Silverados come with four doors. The narrow rear doors open toward the rear and cannot be opened unless the truck’s front doors are opened first. The 1500 HD has a Crew Cab configuration with four conventional, front-hinged doors.

The Silverado’s payloads range from 1,593 to 3,224 pounds, and light-duty models come in gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) from 6,100 to 8,600 pounds. The Z71 offroad package for half-ton 4x4s includes gas shocks, offroad jounce bumpers, specific stabilizer bars, distinctive decals, skid plates and a high-capacity air cleaner.

A cargo bed made of molded composite materials is optional on 1500 short-bed models equipped with four-wheel drive and the Z71 offroad package. Chevrolet says it weighs 50 pounds less than a conventional steel cargo bed, will not rust, and resists dents and scratches better than steel. Options include a bed extender, tubular side steps and a hard or soft tonneau cover.

Interior
Regular-cab pickups come with either a three-place bench seat or a pair of bucket seats. All extended-cab models have a three-place rear bench and either two front buckets or a front bench that holds three occupants. The Crew Cab 1500 HD seats six.

Vinyl-upholstered seats are standard in base models, while cloth is optional. Remote keyless entry and cruise control are now supplied in a package for base models, which can also be equipped with an optional CD player. The LS has a standard CD player, while the LT gets a cassette/CD audio system.

Under the Hood
Four engines are available. A 200-hp, 4.3-liter V-6 is the base power plant and is standard on most two-wheel-drive 1500 models. However, most buyers select one of the three available V-8s. The 4.8-liter V-8 produces 270 hp, the 5.3-liter delivers 285 hp and the 6.0-liter V-8 cranks out 300 hp and is standard in the 2500 series and the 1500 HD model. A four-speed-automatic and five-speed-manual transmission are available.

Two types of 4WD are available. Insta-Trac permits shifting in and out of 4WD High on the move through a floor-mounted transfer case. Autotrac sends all of the power to the rear wheels on smooth, dry pavement and automatically transfers power to the front wheels as needed on slippery surfaces. Two-wheel-drive trucks can have electronic traction control, when fitted with V-8 power, as well as an automatic transmission and a locking rear differential.

2002 Volkswagen Jetta

2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 9995
Miles: 88000
Description: Vehicle Overview

Like the GTI hatchback, Volkswagen’s Jetta sedan gets some engine improvements for 2002. The 1.8-liter turbo now is rated at 180 horsepower — 30 hp more than before — and can work with a five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. During the 2002 model year, a new VR6 4V engine rated at 201 hp is scheduled for production, replacing the 2V VR6. A six-speed-manual transmission will be offered with the new engine.

A premium CD/cassette stereo goes into the GLS and GLX, and all sedans gain a trunk escape handle. Curtain-type airbags are standard in what is Volkswagen’s most popular U.S. model by far. Built from the same design as the Golf, the Jetta sedan has similar front styling but a trunk instead of a hatchback. A wagon joined the front-drive Jetta sedan during the 2001 model year.

Volkswagen also revised its warranty. Instead of the prior two-year/24,000-mile basic coverage and limited 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, VW now offers bumper-to-bumper coverage for four years or 50,000 miles. Wear-and-tear items and adjustments are covered for one year or 12,000 miles. Fully transferable powertrain coverage is for five years or 60,000 miles, and roadside assistance — previously limited to two years — is now for four years or 50,000 miles. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen sold 144,853 Jettas in the United States during 2000, up from 130,054 for the previous calendar year.

Exterior
The Jetta is a four-door sedan with a trunk, but it uses the same sheet metal as the Golf hatchback for the front half. At 172.3 inches long overall, the Jetta is more than 7 inches longer than the Golf but is several inches shorter than the Ford Focus or Honda Civic. The Jetta stands 59 inches tall, measures 68.3 inches wide and rides the same 98.9-inch wheelbase as the Golf. Optional 17-inch alloy wheels can be substituted for the standard 16-inch wheels and tires.

Interior
A taller stance translates to more headroom and a comfortable upright seating position for five occupants. Cargo capacity is 13 cubic feet, but the deep trunk has more usable space than that figure suggests. A split rear seatback folds for additional storage space.

Most controls are high enough to be seen and reached easily. Gauges have red needles, illuminated by attractive blue backlighting. Air conditioning, power door locks and a cassette player are standard. Steering-wheel controls for stereo and cruise functions are optional.

Under the Hood
The GL and GLS sedans come with either a 115-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged, 1.9-liter, direct-injection four-cylinder diesel rated at 90 hp. The 150-hp engine from 2001 was replaced with a standard turbocharged, 180-hp four-cylinder gasoline engine on the Jetta GLS 1.8T model. The 172-hp, 2.8-liter V-6 used previously in the VR6 edition will stretch to 201 hp for the 2002 model year.

A standard five-speed-manual and optional four-speed-automatic transmission are available, but the Jetta GLS 1.8T gets a new five-speed-automatic with a Tiptronic shifting provision. Volkswagen claims the GLS 1.8T will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

Safety
Antilock brakes, side-impact airbags and curtain-type airbags that deploy from the ceiling are standard. All-speed traction control is standard on models with the V-6 or 1.8-liter turbo.

Driving Impressions
Exuberant throttle response is immediately evident in the Jetta 1.8T sedan with the Tiptronic transmission. Excellent transmission reactions and a lack of awkward gear changes add to the pleasure. The Jetta is pleasantly quiet at all times, and it yields a satisfying ride through harsh pavement. Even on wet surfaces, the sedan reacts with total control that is aided by quick, precise steering.

Volkswagens are known for their European character and responsive handling skills, and the Jetta is no exception. Buyers get an impressive array of standard safety features and can count on far more than ba

2008 Pontiac Solstice

2008 Pontiac Solstice GXP for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 20995
Miles: 41000
Description: Vehicle Overview

Pontiac's answer to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Solstice went on sale for 2006 and was followed up by a turbocharged GXP version last year. A healthy list of changes for 2008 include several features that are now standard on both models: a CD stereo with an MP3 player input, a tire pressure monitoring system, and OnStar and XM Satellite Radio, both of which come with free service for a limited period.

Exterior

Among the Solstice's most notable styling features is the reverse-hinged forward-opening "clamshell" hood, matched by a similar setup for the trunklid at the rear. Sporting a hunkered-down look, the Solstice has Pontiac's characteristic dual-port grille. The rear clamshell hides the lowered top, preserving the car's clean appearance. Nacelles that sweep behind each seat are shaped to match the head restraints.

The Solstice has 18-inch silver-painted wheels and all-season tires; the GXP has 18-inch polished alloys with summer performance tires, which aren't suitable for cold temperatures or snow and ice. The GXP includes — and the base Solstice can be optioned with — a limited-slip differential, but even with that and/or the electronic stability system, the Solstice shouldn't be anyone's first choice for winter driving.

Aside from the wheels and badges, not much distinguishes the GXP from the regular Solstice. A rear spoiler is optional for both. New paint choices for 2008 include gray and orange metallics.

The soft-top comes in black or tan. For 2008 it includes an "acoustic headliner," which is intended to decrease cabin noise.

Interior

The Solstice seats two. The wraparound instrument panel bears deeply recessed round gauges with red numerals. The driver's seat includes powered height adjustment, and the steering wheel tilts but doesn't telescope. GXP detailing includes aluminum sill plates, embroidered floor mats and a leather steering wheel.

Leather upholstery is optional on either model. The Solstice comes with a CD stereo with XM Satellite Radio. Steering-wheel stereo controls, cruise control, fog lamps and power mirrors, windows and locks with remote keyless entry are all standard on the GXP and optional on the base Solstice.

Function follows form in terms of cargo capacity: The 5.4 cubic feet of trunk volume, available when the top is up, is in a strange horseshoe shape that limits its usefulness. When the top is down, the trunk becomes almost useless.

Under the Hood

Base Solstices are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that makes 173 horsepower and 167 pounds-feet of torque. The GXP's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 260 hp and 260 pounds-feet of torque. Both models come standard with a five-speed manual transmission, but a five-speed automatic is optional. Oddly enough, the quicker car has better gas mileage ratings: All versions get an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in city driving, but on the highway the GXP gets 28 mpg, where the regular model gets 26 mpg, both with manual transmissions. With the automatic, the GXP is still 1 mpg more frugal, at 25 mpg.

The four-wheel-independent suspension has forged-aluminum control arms and monotube shock absorbers. Base and GXP models have front and rear stabilizer bars, but the GXP's are larger and give a firmer ride. Featuring a space frame structure and a 95.1-inch wheelbase, the Solstice is 157.2 inches long overall, 71.6 inches wide and 50.2 inches tall. Its track width is 60.5 inches in front and 61.2 inches at the rear.

Safety

For 2008, a tire pressure monitoring system is standard equipment. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard, and antilock brakes are optional on the base and standard on the GXP. Likewise, for the first time, base models equipped with optional ABS can also get the optional stability system, which comes gratis on the GXP.

Exterior

Offered in base, LS and LT trim levels, the Silverado 1500 comes in four variations in addition to the Crew Cab: regular cab and extended cab, with either a 6.5- or an 8-foot cargo bed. A Work Truck Package, as well as SS and Z71 Silverados, are offered. Four wheelbases, measuring from 119 to 157.5 inches, are available. Fleetside (slab-sided) cargo beds are standard, but a Sportside design with flared rear fenders also is offered.

Extended-cab Silverados have four doors. The narrow, rear-hinged back doors can be opened only after the front doors are open. Crew Cab trucks have four conventional, front-hinged doors.

Silverados feature angular wheel openings and an aero-styled hood. Front tow hooks and fog lamps are recessed into the front bumper, and the front fascia is flush-mounted.

Interior

Regular-cab pickups contain either a three-place bench or a pair of bucket seats. Extended-cab models have a three-place rear bench and either two front buckets or a front bench that holds three occupants. Crew Cab trucks carry six people. Cloth, vinyl and premium leather seating surfaces are available. XM Satellite Radio is optional.

Under the Hood

Four engines are available. A 195-hp, 4.3-liter V-6 is standard, but most buyers select one of the V-8s: a 285-hp 4.8-liter or a 295-hp 5.3-liter. A higher-output version of the 5.3-liter V-8 yields 310 hp. The SS version gets a high-output 6.0-liter V-8 that pumps out 345 hp and 380 pounds-feet of torque. Silverados use either a four-speed-automatic or five-speed-manual transmission.

Two four-wheel-drive systems are available. Insta-Trac permits shifting in and out of 4WD-High on the move by using a floor-mounted transfer case. Autotrac sends all the power to the rear wheels on smooth, dry pavement and automatically transfers power to the front wheels on slippery surfaces.

Safety

Antilock brakes are standard. Dual front airbags include a passenger-sensing system.

Driving Impressions

In its basic regular-cab form and with few extras installed, the Silverado 1500 behaves like a serious workhorse. You can expect a traditional pickup-truck experience, which translates to a bouncy ride — especially when the cargo bed is empty. But there's plenty of energy, especially when one of the V-8 engines is installed.

Performance with the automatic transmission is satisfying. Handling isn't especially ponderous, as the 1500 maneuvers rather well through urban environments. The fully calibrated instruments are easy to read, and the Silverado runs rather quietly for a truck.

Last redesigned for the 1999 model year, Chevrolet’s full-size pickup truck gets upgraded emissions control systems and some repackaged options for 2002. All models now have a chrome bumper and grille, while extended-cab pickups are now available with an automatic transmission only.

During 2001, Chevrolet added a Crew Cab body style, with four conventional doors, to the light-duty 1500 series.

2003 BMW X5 3.0i for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 16495
Miles: 97000
Description: Vehicle Overview

BMW joined the luxury sport utility vehicle ranks in the 2000 model year with its X5, a car-based model created to challenge the Infiniti QX4, Lexus RX 300 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Equipped with permanently engaged four-wheel drive (4WD), BMW says the X5 is suitable for “any road, any time, any reason,” but it isn’t really intended for use as a true offroad vehicle. Instead, BMW calls the X5 a “sports activity vehicle.” The stylish and sporty SUV is produced at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, S.C., alongside the company’s Z3 sports car (which has been renamed to Z4 for 2003). Sales of the X5 in 2001 totaled 40,622 units, according to Automotive News.

The X5 initially came with only a 4.4-liter V-8 engine. A lower-priced six-cylinder model, dubbed X5 3.0i, arrived later and carried a 225-hp 3.0-liter power plant. Although the unibody X5 is built on a passenger-car platform, BMW says the chassis is unique to this vehicle. The automaker promises the driving dynamics of a car with the X5, coupled with 4WD security.

In December 2001, BMW added a high-performance X5 4.6is version with a specially tuned 340-horsepower V-8 engine, which the automaker says can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds. BMW’s Aero Package, a sport suspension, a sport interior and 20-inch wheels are included. This high-performance version is meant for the “SUV owner who is looking for the ultimate in performance,” says Product Manager Martin Birkmann.

BMW’s Rear Head Protection System and a Brake Force Display will be standard for 2003, and the available navigation system gets an upgrade to DVD operation. Adjustable Ride Height is available on X5s equipped with the Sport Package.

Exterior
The X5 exhibits a more distinctive, eye-catching shape than other SUVs on the road. Just a glance at the X5’s front end reveals that it’s a BMW. It has classic styling that is highlighted by the familiar twin kidney-shape grilles. At nearly 184 inches long overall on a 111-inch wheelbase, the X5 is a few inches longer than the RX 300 and M-Class. The four-door SUV has a two-way tailgate with a top portion that swings up and a lower section that swings down.

An optional load-floor extension slides out on tracks that are built into the cargo floor. The six-cylinder 3.0i model comes with 17-inch tires, and the regular 4.4i V-8-powered model sports 18-inch tires. A Sport Package for the 4.4i features 19-inch high-performance tires and a firmer suspension. On the high-performance V-8-powered 4.6is, the tires measure 20 inches in diameter.

Interior
Seating for five occupants is available in the X5. It features a high position for the driver and a 60/40-split, folding seat in the rear. Standard X5 amenities include a leather-trimmed interior, heated front seats and familiar red instrument-panel lighting in a carlike dashboard. Options include an in-dash CD player, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof and BMW’s navigation system. The cargo volume with the seats folded down is 54.4 cubic feet.

Under the Hood
The X5 4.6is tops the performance spectrum by packing a 340-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 engine, while the X5 4.4i carries a 4.4-liter V-8 that develops 290 hp. The X5 3.0i uses a 225-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine. Six-cylinder models may have either a five-speed-manual or five-speed-automatic transmission, while the V-8 X5s team only with the automatic gearbox. Permanently engaged 4WD automatically apportions power among the four wheels, and Hill Descent Control maintains a constant speed and grip while going down steep grades.

Safety
Antilock brakes, side-impact airbags and curtain-type airbags are standard. The automaker’s Rear Head Protection System has been added for 2003.

Driving Impressions
Like BMW’s coupes, sedans and wagons, the X5 excels in handling skills. Its steering is tight and precise and produces an appetizing level of control and confidence. The X5’s performance is impressive

Launched as an early 2003 model, the CTS was built on a new rear-wheel-drive platform and featured square-edge styling. Suspension revisions and interior changes for 2004 were intended to soften the ride and reduce noise. A high-performance CTS-V sedan debuted during the 2004 season.

Exterior

Styling themes for the CTS are rooted in Cadillac's Evoq concept car. Cadillac touted the CTS as "the first 100 percent application of Cadillac's art and science approach to passenger-car design."

Cadillac described the CTS body as bold and chiseled, incorporating "sharp edges and crisp intersecting lines" and a short front overhang. Measuring 190.1 inches long overall, the CTS rides a 113.4-inch wheelbase. Integrated, traditionally styled vertical headlights and taillights are installed. The large, shield-shaped, louvered eggcrate grille is reminiscent of Cadillacs dating back to the 1930s. Cadillac's wreath-and-crest symbol is incorporated into the grille.

Cast-aluminum wheels hold 16-inch tires. An optional Sport Package includes Cadillac's StabiliTrak electronic stability system, a sport-tuned suspension, a load-leveling rear suspension and 17-inch wheels.

Interior

Five people fit inside the CTS sedan. Wood is used only in areas where it will come in contact with occupants: on the three-spoke steering wheel, gearshift knob and door pulls. The seats have leather seating surfaces, and heated front seats are optional. General Motors' OnStar communication system is standard, and XM Satellite Radio is available. Trunk capacity measures 12.8 cubic feet.

Under the Hood

Cadillac's 3.6-liter V-6 produces 255 hp, and the new 2.8-liter V-6 generates 210 hp. Both engines work with a new Aisin six-speed-manual transmission, and a five-speed automatic is optional. A button for the automatic selects Sport, Winter and Economy modes.

Safety

Six airbags are installed: dual-stage front airbags, seat-mounted side-thorax airbags and roof-mounted side curtain-type airbags. Antilock brakes and all-speed traction control are standard.

Driving Impressions

Controversial CTS styling might be considered either alluring or alarming, but there's less to argue about when it comes to this Cadillac's excellent driving characteristics. Subtle but bountiful performance is helped by an excellent, quick-shifting automatic transmission.

For the most part, drivers can expect the feel of a European sport sedan, but the CTS isn't quite as refined as an Audi or BMW. The CTS is exceptionally stable on the road and easy to drive around town. Steering response is on the sporty side. The performance-packed CTS-V behaves as promised, accelerating with energetic haste.

The controls are somewhat unorthodox. The driver's seat is especially comfortable and adequately supportive. Headroom, elbowroom and legroom are abundant up front.

2003 BMW 3 series

2003 BMW 3 series M3Ci for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 21995
Miles: 71000
Description: Vehicle Overview

Not much has changed for BMW’s high-performance M3 coupe and convertible, except for the addition of a standard rain sensor with automatic headlight control. On sale since 2001, the M3 models are powered by a 333-horsepower inline-six-cylinder engine — that’s about 100 hp more than the regular BMW 3 Series engine delivers.

During 2002, a sequentially shifting manual transmission became available. Building upon Formula One racing technology, it offers hydraulic sequential shifting of the six-speed gearbox, which can be either automatically controlled or driver controlled by using shift paddles. Other M3 extras include 18-inch tires, a sport suspension and aerodynamic body trim.

Exterior
Similar in dimensions and appearance to the regular BMW 330Ci coupe and convertible, the M editions have some unique differences, including a distinctive bumper and spoiler ensemble, a crosshatch center air intake and elliptical fog lights. A unique, aluminum hood has subtle power dome accenting and allows space for the M engine below. Wheel openings are flared outward by an extra 20 millimeters to accommodate the wide tires. Gills behind the front wheel openings display an M3 emblem, and the side mirrors have a distinct aero shape.

A subtle deck-lid spoiler sits above a special M bumper and apron design. The M3 has a wider front and rear track than its less-potent BMW mates, and it also features unique suspension and underbody components. A rising belt line imparts a visually lower stance on the convertible.

Interior
Both the coupe and convertible seat four occupants on black M Cloth and Nappa leather upholstery. The convertible has power front seats. An easy-entry feature makes it simpler to gain access to the backseat. Cargo capacity is 9.5 cubic feet for the coupe and 7.7 cubic feet for the convertible.

A heated glass rear window is standard in the convertible, which has a power-operated top. One push of a button initiates the entire top-down operation. As the fabric top unlatches at the windshield header and moves upward, a rigid magnesium cover opens and then closes over the folded material. Options include a navigation system, a removable aluminum hardtop and BMW’s Park Distance Control system.

Under the Hood
While the regular BMW 330Ci coupe and convertible carry a 225-hp engine, the M editions get a 333-hp, 3.2-liter inline-six-cylinder with stepless variable valve timing. This engine drives a Getrag Type D six-speed-manual transmission that has available sequential shifting.

BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control system combines all-speed traction control and cornering-stability enhancement. BMW claims the M3 coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while the M3 convertible can achieve that time in 5.4 seconds.

Safety
Dual front airbags, seat-integrated side-impact airbags and all-disc antilock brakes are standard. A Rollover Protection System in the convertible automatically deploys stabilizer bars behind the rear seats if it detects an impending rollover. Daytime running lights are installed, and rear-seat side-impact airbags are optional.

Driving Impressions
Performance might be irresistible, but only serious enthusiasts are likely to appreciate the M3’s sequential gearbox, which demands considerable attention to derive peak results. The sequentially shifting manual transmission’s shifts can jolt occupants’ necks. Even in fully automatic mode, gear changes are far from gentle.

Its PL45 platform was shared with the first-generation "Typ 8D" Audi A4, which was unveiled 2 years earlier, and saw a return to the Passat sharing its platform with Audi's equivalent model for the first time since the second-generation (B2) Passat, which shared its platform with the second-generation "Typ 81" Audi 80/Audi 90 (the A4 is the successor to the Audi 80 line).
The Passat introduced a new design language, first seen on the Concept 1 concept car, for the latest generation of Volkswagens such as the Mk4 Golf, Bora and Polo Mk4. Aerodynamic work gave the B5 Passat a coefficient of drag of 0.27 (saloon model).
The car featured fully-independent four-link front suspension; and a semi-independent torsion beam for front-wheel-drive models or a fully-independent suspension on the 4motion 4WD models. Three transmission options were available: a 5-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed manual transmission (codename 01E) and a 5-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic.

2001–2004 Volkswagen Passat SE V6 sedan
B5 Passat models built after late 2000, also known as B5.5 models, received minor styling and mechanical revisions including revised projector-optic headlights, bumpers, tail lights, and chrome trim.
A 4.0 litre W8 engine producing 275 PS was introduced in 2001 in a luxury version of the car that included standard 4motion all-wheel drive. This engine was intended to be a test bed for Volkswagen Group's new W engine technology, which would later make an appearance on the W12 in the Phaeton and Audi A8, and the W16 engine in the Bugatti Veyron. The engine was discontinued in 2004.

The 4.0 litre - 244.0 cu in W8 engine produced (275 PS; 271 bhp) at 6,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) and (273 ft·lbf) of torque at 2,750 rpm, yet was considered a fuel-efficient eight cylinder engine due to the design. It also had a two stage resonance induction system to boost cylinder filling across the engine speed range. It had two simplex roller chain-driven (relay method, using three chains) double overhead camshaft (two overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, hence "quad cam"), and twin balance shafts to smooth out residual vibrations inherent in the layout. One additional advantage was that the W8 shared some components and machining with narrow-angle VR5 and VR6 engines, leading to cost reduction in one of the most expensive engines Volkswagen Passenger Cars has ever produced.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen last redesigned its Jetta halfway through the 2005 model year. For 2008, the base 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder engine gets a horsepower boost, and the model's trim levels have been revised; the Jetta is now offered in S, SE and SEL forms. Competitors include the Honda Civic and Mazda3.

The Jetta GLI is a performance-oriented version of the model that features a turbocharged four-cylinder under its hood. The GLI's and WOLFSBURG EDITION ride height is reduced for a sportier appearance, and launch control comes standard for models with the DSG transmission.

Exterior

Exhibiting a sleeker look than the prior-generation Jetta, the current model has a large trapezoidal grille. The S trim level has standard 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but alloy wheels of the same diameter are optional. The SEL comes with 17-inch wheels. A sunroof is optional.

Interior

Up to five people can fit inside the Jetta, which has front bucket seats and a three-place 60/40-split folding rear seat. Non-intruding hinges help provide sufficient luggage space in the trunk, which holds 16 cubic feet of cargo.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a CD stereo, and power windows, locks and mirrors.

Under the Hood

The Jetta's 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder now produces 170 hp — 20 hp more than last year — and drives either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual gear selection and a Sport mode.

Safety

Antilock brakes, traction control, active front head restraints, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags are standard. Side-impact airbags for outboard rear passengers are optional. Volkswagen's Electronic Stabilization Program is standard on all models but the S, where it is optional.

GLI / WOLFSBURG EDITION

Featuring sportier styling than regular Jettas, the GLI uses a direct-injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. The four-cylinder teams with a six-speed manual or a six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox automated manual transmission.

Standard GLI features include 17-inch wheels, high-intensity-discharge headlights and a six-CD stereo. A navigation system is optional. Back to top

Driving Impressions

The Jetta feels particularly substantial, if a little on the heavy side. The suspension is definitely firm, but it doesn't impair the ride on smooth highways. Steering feel is excellent, and the Jetta stays neatly on course. With wholly predictable handling, it's simply masterful through curves. Body lean is minimal through tight mountain switchbacks.

The gauges are large and easy to read, and visibility is very good. The seats are beautifully cushioned and appropriately bolstered; they also offer good thigh and back support.

They'll sound different, too, thanks to a standard iPod hookup and a Pioneer subwoofer.

Jim Farley, Scion's vice president, said the tC's steering, suspension and brakes were tuned with a European bias. In fact, the car's platform is shared with the Avensis, a Toyota model that's sold in Europe. The tC hatchback coupe uses a 160-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

Exterior

For 2008, the tC's split grille has been touched up. Now, the upper grille is mesh and the lower one is a lattice-type design. The headlights have black trim. At the rear, the tC gets new brake lights. A panoramic glass moonroof is standard. Side mirrors incorporate turn-signal indicators — a feature typically found on upscale luxury cars. A power hatch release is standard. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels hold 45-series tires, and 18-inchers are optional.

The Spec Package adds a fixed glass roof, 16-inch steel wheels with covers (surely meant to be replaced with custom hoops) and 205/55R16 tires. Azure Pearl and Black Cherry Pearl paint colors are out, replaced by Sizzling Crimson Mica and Wave Line Pearl.

Interior

Changes inside include silver-colored accents on the center cluster and the assist handles in the ceiling of the car. There's also new seat fabric, as well as standard iPod connectivity and a standard Pioneer subwoofer for 2008.

Five passengers fit inside the tC, and the driver's seat has height and thigh adjustments. The 60/40-split rear seat has three-point seat belts and head restraints for three occupants. The rear seats also recline 45 degrees.

The center console includes an armrest, and keyless entry is standard. Additional standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, a Pioneer stereo, and power windows, locks and mirrors. With the front and rear passenger seats folded flat, more than 8.5 feet of space is available for carrying long items.

Spec Package models delete the steering-wheel audio controls and get a urethane steering wheel and 12-volt power outlet.

Under the Hood

Generating 161 hp, the all-aluminum 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine incorporates Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. A four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual are available.

Cruise control and an engine immobilizer are deleted from Spec Package models.

Safety

All-disc antilock brakes and a driver's knee airbag are standard. Side-impact and side curtain airbags are also standard.

1999 Lincoln Town Car

1999 Lincoln Town Car Signature for sale.

Click for more details
Price: 7495
Miles: 70000
Description: Squint your eyes when you look at Lincoln's Town Car and you can see hints of a classic Jaguar sedan in its mouth-shaped grille, sharply rounded roofline and curved taillights.

The Town Car is classically American, too, and much bigger than any Jag would ever be. It uses a full-perimeter frame, separate body, single-overhead-cam (SOHC) V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.

Last year it underwent a complete redesign and was cloaked with a body that is a vast departure from the upright and angular look of its predecessor. Some traditionalists may miss the old car, with its pillow-soft ride, gargantuan trunk and a nose that bobbed over bumps like the bow of a ship at sea, but most folks will find the new car's youthful look and tighter handling more appealing.

The redesigned Town Car is one prong of a three-product strategy aimed at attracting younger buyers. The Navigator SUV and the mid-size Lincoln sports sedan, due for debut later this year, are the other two.

Since the entire car was reworked last year, upgrades to the Town Car for 1999 have been incremental, with one exception: Side airbags are now mounted in the front seats.

On the Executive series, door panels get wood trim and the front armrest contains a storage bin. Rear armrests have cupholders. Power seat controls are now on the door instead of the seat, and a two-tone paint scheme is offered.

Our test car was a refrigerator-white Cartier model, with bone colored leather seats and woodgrain trim on the dash. The woodgrain trim adds liveliness and warmth to the broad, flat expanse of the instrument panel, which has very little sculpting in order to preserve the three-across capability of the front bench seat. The instrumentation was a jarring combination of white-on-black gauges and bright-green digital readouts for fuel and odometer. The electro-luminescent, round-gauge panel from the Continental would seem more appropriate for a car in this price category.

The radio is located high in the center of the dash, a long reach for me, but auxiliary controls on the steering wheel made change stations or volume a simple move of my finger on the wheel.

Six can sit inside the Town Car, although most folks won't squeeze themselves quite that tight very often. The seats, both front and back, are broad and accommodating.

The trunk has 20.1 cubic feet, but taking full advantage of it is tricky because the spare tire partially blocks access. With careful packing it will hold a reasonable amount of luggage, just don't plan on carrying a large box back there.

Mirroring the change to a more youthful exterior, the Town Car's driving dynamics have undergone a similar transformation. The ride is still plush, but it feels more controlled, and less floaty, now. Lincoln says the Watt's Linkage rear suspension improves straight-line tracking and counters the tendency for the vehicle to squat under acceleration and dive under braking.

Steer ing improvements are noticeable, but it still feels over-boosted at slow speeds.

Mechanically, the Town Car is almost identical to the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. The 4.6-liter, V8 engine puts out 205 horsepower in standard form, but a dual exhaust system on the Cartier and Signature Touring Sedan models bring that to 220. This engine has adequate power and performs smoothly, even though it has to haul around about 4,000 pounds.

Of course, the transmission is automatic, and the lever is mounted on the steering column. Shifting out of overdrive for more power is done by punching a button on the end of the lever.

Last year's redesign of the Town Car was dramatic. This year's addition of side airbags fixes one of the shortcomings and should improve its safety.

Price

The base price of the Cartier model I drove was $42,825. The premium package (power moonroof and trunk-mounted compact disc player) brought the sticker price to $45,090.

Wa anty

The standard warranty is for four years or 50,000 miles.

Of course, with the price of a gallon of gas now topping the price of a pint of water, anyone spotted in a car carrying either badge risks the wrath of the self-anointed energy police, those keen on dictating what people drive.

Fear not, the supercharged Chevrolet Cobalt SS coupe also carries a window sticker giving it license to ply the streets alongside the battery-powered cars those in charge of political correctness deem worthy of flag-waving Americans.

That sticker reads 22 m.p.g. city/30 m.p.g. highway, so though the SS puts some zip into the daily routine, you don't have to hide your head because your car doesn't have a battery pack under the rear seat or a corn stalk painted on the decklid.

Hop in and take off -- and leave the guilt in the garage.

Looks good, too, with sporty front and rear fascias, lower rocker extensions along the sides and a high-mounted deck lid spoiler. Titanium-face gauges and a supercharge boost gauge along the A-pillar (the one at the windshield) deck out what was born as an economy car.

The supercharged 2-liter, 205-horsepower 4-cylinder delivers 200 foot-pounds of torque for those who prefer lively to limp, while boasting membership in the 30-m.p.g. club that includes such bigger members as the Chevy Malibu and Impala as well as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The Cobalt SS does zero-to-60 in 6.4 seconds with a top speed of 143 m.p.h., though don't expect the 4-banger to deliver 30 m.p.g. at that speed. Of course, if you're pushing 143 m.p.h., mileage is probably the last thing on your mind.

And thanks to a sports-tuned suspension and 18-inch performance radials that stick to the pavement in tight turns and corners, there's no need for mea culpas even at a few m.p.h. over the posted limit -- unless the police stop to say howdy.

That sports-tuned suspension was developed on the track and combined with those 18-inch radials, higher spring and shock rates and larger diameter stabilizer bars to keep the body flat with no stumbling. Speed-sensitive steering adds to the agility.

While the SS pops away from the light, aided and abetted by the supercharge power burst, it's a car whose appeal is limited to those who have mastered a 5-speed manual. No automatic, not even one of those tap-shifter jobs.

Chevy also offers a Cobalt SS in coupe and sedan form with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, powered by a 2.4-liter, 173-h.p. 4 but no supercharged boost. The attraction is sporty show rather than sports-car go. But in the 2008 model year, these non-supercharged pretenders will lose the SS designation in favor of being called Sport models.

As an everyday driver, Cobalt SS trunk space is good, and the split rear seat backs fold so you can slip more stuff inside through the trunk. But the rear seats don't fold flat, so count on a balancing act for whatever you put in.

And unless you have a couple little kids, the rear seat probably best holds cargo. Once clearing the seat belts serving as a barrier to the back, you then have to put up with a shortage of leg, knee and especially melon room.

Other standard hardware includes four-wheel, anti-lock disc brakes, power mirrors, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player, XM satellite radio, heated leather seats, power door locks and windows, cruise control, rear-window defroster, keyless entry, remote trunk release, front and rear floor mats, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel and daytime running lamps.

Vehicle Overview

The ES 300 used to be the hottest item in the Lexus lineup by posting the highest annual sales and, as the entry-level model, drawing new customers to Toyota’s luxury brand.

Now, however, the RX 300 sport utility vehicle is the most popular Lexus model, and the company is trying to create a more youthful, vigorous image with a new entry-level model: the sporty, rear-drive IS 300 sedan.

Where does that leave the front-drive ES 300 sedan that is based on the Toyota Camry? The ES 300 is in a holding pattern until the 2002 or ’03 model year, when a redesigned model will arrive — again sharing components with the Camry.

Exterior
The ES 300 has the same 105-inch wheelbase as the Camry but is about 2 inches longer at 190 overall. The only exterior panels the two share are the rocker panels — the body parts below the doors.

Interior
The ES 300 has the usual seats for five and standard cloth upholstery. The optional leather is the same kind used in the flagship LS 430 sedan. Like the LS 430, the ES has genuine wood trim and a richly furnished interior with a similar look.

Automatic climate control, power front seats, remote keyless entry and a theft-deterrent system are standard.

Under the Hood
The 3.0-liter V-6 engine is the same one available in the Camry, but it produces 10 horsepower more at 210 in the ES 300 because of different intake and exhaust systems. A four-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.

Safety
Side-impact airbags for the front seats, antilock brakes and traction control are standard. Vehicle Skid Control, which controls wheel slip to help stabilize the vehicle, is optional. It includes a brake assist feature that applies full braking force faster than the driver can in emergency stops.

Driving Impressions
The ES 300 is everything people like about the Camry, plus it has more amenities, a more luxurious interior and the extra service that comes with the Lexus brand. It is smooth, quiet, luxurious and practically bulletproof in its reliability and durability.

Compared to Audis and BMWs, however, it lacks spirit and a sporting flair. The ES 300 has all the right features and impeccable quality, but it doesn’t stir emotions the way some rivals do, which is why Lexus added the IS 300 to its lineup.

Nothing is more traditional in the world of sport utility vehicles than the smallest, entry-level Jeep model. Today's Wrangler is a direct descendant of the World War II-era military Jeep. In fact, many consider the Wrangler to have pioneered the SUV category, even though the term "SUV" didn't emerge until after Jeeps had been around for decades.

In the 2003 model year, a super-duty Rubicon model debuted with locking front and rear differentials and all-disc brakes. In 2004, an extended-length Wrangler Unlimited emerged that used a wheelbase 10 inches longer than that of its mates. A Rubicon edition of the Unlimited goes on sale during the 2005 model year and is aimed at hard-core offroad enthusiasts.

A six-speed-manual gearbox replaces the five-speed unit in 2005 Wranglers, and an in-dash six-CD changer is available. A new Premium Package for the Wrangler Unlimited includes a bright grille and body-colored fender flares.

DaimlerChrysler's Jeep division produces the two-door Wrangler convertible in two forms: with a folding soft-top or an optional removable hardtop. The Wrangler was last redesigned for 1997.

Exterior

Even at a glance, there's no mistaking the heritage of the Wrangler. Its upright vertical grille echoes the World War II version. The windshield and soft convertible top can be folded down when driving conditions permit. Half-steel doors contain zip-out plastic side windows, which adds to the vehicle's rugged appearance.

The folding soft-top is a four-ply design. A metal hardtop with full steel doors and roll-up side windows is optional, which makes the driving experience considerably more civilized. Regular-size Wranglers are only 154.9 inches long overall, measure 68.3 inches wide and ride on a 93.4-inch wheelbase. Unlimited models are 15 inches longer. With its soft-top in place, the Wrangler is 71.2 inches tall.

Interior

Two front bucket seats and a folding two-place bench in the rear are installed. An optional Add-A-Trunk feature provides a lockable storage compartment in the cargo area. It features thumbscrews for easy removal or sliding forward.

Under the Hood

Installed in the SE model, the Wrangler's base power plant is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 147 horsepower. All others models get a 190-hp, 4.0-liter inline-six-cylinder, which is optional in the SE. Both engines team with either a six-speed-manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. Part-time four-wheel drive is intended for use only on slippery or loose surfaces.

Safety

Antilock brakes are optional only on Sport models. Side-impact airbags are not available.

Driving Impressions

Modern-day Wranglers are a lot more civilized than their ancestors from the early 1990s and before. Whether the Wrangler is motoring down the highway, whipping through urban byways or traversing the most demanding offroad obstacle, this vehicle is nimble, quick, precise and fun to drive. Wranglers can get noisy, but not nearly as much as previous-generation models. The Wrangler Unlimited adds welcome extra space for rear passengers.
