Vehicle Overview

After four decades on the market, Ford's "pony car" is entering a new generation. Ford introduced the 2005 Mustang at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Last redesigned in 1999, it's the last of the traditional rear-wheel-drive pony cars.

The new model's styling cues are borrowed from Mustangs of the 1960s, but it is built with a new, fully modern architecture. "The Mustang is more modern, more livable and safer, without losing its street swagger," Ford says. The automaker promises even more attitude in the latest Mustang, noting that its "menacing sharklike nose imparts an attitude not seen since the 1967 model."

Two engines are available: a 210-horsepower V-6 and a 300-hp V-8 for the Mustang GT. "The new Mustang is pure American muscle," said J Mays, Ford's vice president of design. The Mustang coupe goes on sale in the fall of 2004.

Exterior

The 2005 Mustang's wheelbase has grown by 6 inches. According to Ford, the wheels were pushed to the corners, but the car's signature long hood and short deck remain. The new coupe features a classic fastback profile.

Styling touches from the past include C-scoops in the sides, tri-bar (three-element) taillamps and a "galloping horse" badge in the center of the forward-leaning grille. Jeweled round headlights sit in trapezoidal housings. An accent line runs the full length of the body, culminating in the "C-scoop" shape just behind the door. Earlier Mustangs had louvers or scoops in the C-pillar, but the 2005 model gets a small triangular window instead.

Built on a 107.1-inch wheelbase, the 2005 Mustang is 187.6 inches long overall and 54.5 inches tall. The Mustang's suspension consists of MacPherson struts in the front and a three-link live axle with a Panhard rod at the rear. Aluminum-spoked wheels hold 17-inch tires on the GT, but the base V-6 Mustang gets 16-inch rubber.

Interior

Mustangs seat four occupants on front and rear bucket seats. Three design themes will be available, and they include what Ford says is the industry's first color-configurable instrument panel, which can display more than 125 different background colors.

Aluminum dashboard trim panels can be installed. Chrome-ringed air vents are aligned across the dashboard precisely in line with the large barrel-style gauges. The three-spoke steering wheel has a black hub with the Mustang horse and tri-color logo. An optional Color Accent Package features charcoal with red leather seats, red door inserts and red floormats.

Standard equipment includes power windows and mirrors, keyless entry, interval wipers and a heated rear window. A CD player is standard, but audio options extend all the way to a 1,000-watt Shaker Audiophile system. Trunk space amounts to 13.1 cubic feet in the coupe and 9.7 cubic feet in the convertible.

Under the Hood

The 2005 Mustang gets a choice of engines. The new single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V-6 produces 210 hp. A 4.6-liter all-aluminum V-8 in the GT pumps out 300 hp and 320 pounds-feet of torque. The V-8 engine, which has three-valve cylinder heads, runs on regular gasoline.

The engines work with either a standard five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic. A true dual exhaust system with 2.5-inch mandrel bent stainless-steel pipes is installed on the Mustang GT.

Safety

Side-impact airbags are optional. Antilock brakes are standard on the GT and optional on the V-6 model. Ford's Personal Safety System features dual-stage front airbags.

Driving Impressions

The latest Mustang is more refined than its predecessor. Models with the V-6 are good, but those equipped with V-8 power are better yet. Steering has a satisfying and confident feel that's especially appealing on twisty roads.

Suspension differences between the two models aren't dramatic, but the GT is considerably more sure-footed. Its ride is no rougher than that of
